LEATHER COLLAR FOR DOGS
A quality leather collar is a must-have accessory for dogs. Leather is a durable, elastic, high-quality material. When in contact with water, the collar does not slip, and the skin does not become stiff. Often, leather products are distinguished by the presence of metal buckles, in contrast to plastic counterparts.
Types of leather collars
Collars can be braided, in the form of straps or rings for exhibitions, of various colours, lengths, widths. Spikes, rivets, personalized medallions or address tags can be used as decorations on a leather collar. There are special models for training. They have a handle for gripping by hand if you need to hold the dog at some point.
The advantages of leather models
Manufacturers and owners of leather collars highlight the following advantages of products, compared to models made from other materials:
- soft, pleasant to the touch material;
- reliable fittings;
- strong and durable.
How to choose a collar
Most owners, when choosing a pet accessory, take into account only the colour and cost of the collar, completely oblivious to the more important characteristics. To purchase a good leather collar for a pet, you need to take into account the parameters of the animal.
Length
First, you need to take measurements using a measuring tape. To do this, you need to measure the girth of the widest part of the neck. Then you need to add centimetres, depending on the parameters of the pet. Dogs weighing up to 4.5 kg are fitted with a collar that is 2 cm longer. For medium-sized breeds, you will need to add approximately 5 cm in length, and for large animals around 8 cm.
It is necessary to leave a minimum distance between the neck and the accessory, which is equal to the width of two fingers on the hand. If the dog is regularly trimmed, then the neck circumference is measured immediately after it and additional cm are added. The best option, especially for growing puppies, is an adjustable collar.
Width
Large, strong breeds are advised to select wide models of leather collars. The wider the product, the less pressure it creates. However, wide models are not suitable for small breeds of dogs, as the weight is high, the pet may feel discomfort while wearing the product. You need to buy wide leather collars for dogs with long neck, and narrower ones for animals with a short neck. Most often there are models with a width of 2 cm, 2.5 cm, 3.8 cm.
Caring for a leather product
You can extend the life of your leather collar with proper care. After each wetting, the product must be rinsed with fresh water and allowed to dry naturally. In this case, do not allow direct sunlight to enter, otherwise, the skin will dry out and deform. You can apply leather oil or conditioner to the collar. They will prevent the skin from drying out and becoming too tough.
